The Jacobite Steam Train is an absolute must for any Harry Potter fan, famously known as the real-life Hogwarts Express. Running from Fort William to Mallaig, the journey takes you across the breath-taking Scottish Highlands, including the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The train operates twice a day, seven days a week, covering an 84-mile round trip (note: all tickets are return, as they don’t offer one-way journeys).

Prices vary depending on class: an adult day return is £105 in 1st class or £69 in standard class, while children’s tickets are £69 for 1st class and £39 in standard.

For something extra special, private tables for two in 1st class are available at £229.

The Jacobite Steam Train runs both a morning and afternoon service, giving you two chances a day to experience this magical journey. The morning train leaves Fort William at 10:15am and arrives in Mallaig at 12:26pm, giving you just under two hours to explore before heading back at 14:10pm, returning to Fort William at 16:03pm. The afternoon service departs Fort William at 12:50pm, arriving in Mallaig at 15:06pm, with the return journey at 17:00pm, getting you back at 18:52pm.

We chose to sit in standard class, it had comfy seats, plenty of atmosphere, and no complaints at all. The only thing to keep in mind is that there isn’t much storage space, so pack light! Onboard, there’s a trolley service with snacks, drinks, and even some really fun Harry Potter souvenirs including the sweets so you can live your best Hogwarts Express moment! The journey goes by quite quickly and we made lots of Harry Potter friends onboard.

One of the best things about the ride is that you can sit on one side on the way there and then swap on the return so you don’t miss a thing. Along the way, you’ll pass some amazing sights, including Dumbledore’s Grave on Loch Eilean na Mòine, but the ultimate highlight has to be the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Seeing the train go across it in real life is just incredible, and it is so much fun spotting all the Harry Potter fans gathered below, watching the train go by so you can give them a wave.

One important thing to keep in mind is don’t stick your head or phone out of the windows. It might be tempting when you’re passing over the viaduct or through the stunning scenery, but it is not allowed and you could get into trouble with the staff. Plus, the views from inside are amazing anyway, so you won’t miss out!

When you arrive in Mallaig, you’ll have just under two hours to explore before the return journey. It’s a small town, so there isn’t loads to do, but that’s part of its charm.

If the weather’s good, you can hop on a little boat trip which lasts around 45 minutes or wander down to the beach, which is absolutely beautiful. We visited on a rainy day, so instead we explored the cute little shops and just enjoyed the views. You also can’t go wrong with some fresh fish and chips here, they’re definitely worth trying before you head back!

There are also a few Harry Potter-themed shops in Mallaig, but the best one has to be Haggard Alley. It’s packed with quirky trinkets and magical souvenirs, so be prepared to spend a lot of money! My favourite part was the dancing broomstick, which was really fun to watch.

After you’ve explored, it’s time to hop back on the train for the return journey to Fort William. Just make sure you don’t miss it, there’s no other way back!

Overall, the Jacobite Steam Train is an incredible day out, no matter the weather. Whether you’re a die-hard Potterhead or simply love scenic train rides, this journey through the Scottish Highlands is a truly magical experience not to be missed.

Top Tips

  • 🎟️Book early as tickets sell out fast, especially in the summer and during school holidays. If you have got your heart set on it, book as far in advance as possible.
  • 🚂Sit on the left-hand side going out of Fort William. This is the side with the best views of the Glenfinnan Viaduct and the surrounding lochs and mountains. On the return, the right-hand side will give you the same views.

  • 🕰️Arrive early at the station, boarding can get busy, and arriving early gives you plenty of time to take photos of the train itself.

  • ☕Bring snacks. There is a trolley service on board, but having your own treats makes the trip more comfortable especially if you are travelling with kids.

  • 📸Don’t forget your camera because the scenery is absolutely stunning. From mountains to coastlines, every moment is photo-worthy.

  • ☔Check the weather, you will be in Scotland, so be prepared for rain, sunshine, or both in the same hour!
